We are delighted to mark the opening of our newly refurbished College Theatre with our Senior Production of “Matilda Jnr”. The difficult process of casting began in the Michaelmas term with students from Year 9 to Year 13 cast in principal roles. The demanding vocal score and libretto of the show is not to be underestimated and students have worked so hard to bring Kelly and Minchin’s words and music to life in spectacular fashion.
As is tradition at Llandovery College, every piece of scenery, props and costume has been crafted and sourced by our talented staff and students.
The costumes and props have been made by pupils in Year 9-11 studying for the Arts Award qualification under the guidance of Miss Beynon as well as the beautiful typography tapestry that hangs on the curtains.
This production poses many creative challenges in terms of technical theatre; from devising a way to make a newt filled glass of water tip over to having mind-controlled chalk writing. All of these aspects have been overseen by Ms Morgan whose skill and innovation has brought real dynamism to our team. Mr Field has also been tutoring pupils in the use of our new sound and lighting systems and, as I’m sure you’ll agree, the results are simply stunning, and a suitable counterpoint to the on-stage action.
